It is possible to have normal visual acuity while still experiencing difficulties with the coordination or functioning of both eyes.

An orthoptist can provide care in a variety of situations, including the following:

insufficient convergence;

diplopia (double vision);

strabismus;

amblyopia;

eye strain or visual discomfort;

certain visual disorders related to neurological conditions or low vision. He or she performs eye exams, investigates and diagnoses eye diseases or abnormalities, and may prescribe corrective lenses or recommend medical or surgical treatment when necessary.

The orthoptist, in collaboration with the ophthalmologist, performs various orthoptic examinations and procedures to evaluate, manage, and improve visual functions.

What is orthoptic rehabilitation?

Orthoptic rehabilitation is recommended following a comprehensive evaluation of visual function. The process begins with a consultation with an ophthalmologist to assess eye health and identify any potential causes of visual problems.

An orthoptic evaluation is then conducted to analyze the functioning of the eyes and their coordination in greater detail. Based on the results of these evaluations, orthoptic therapy may be initiated when indicated.

Orthoptic rehabilitation is based on exercises tailored to each patient’s needs.

It aims to improve the coordination and functioning of both eyes, particularly convergence, fixation, and eye movements.

What is orthoptics?
